Introduction to Curriculum PDF Print E-mail

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island is committed to the career development of our housestaff. This process begins early in internship when our new residents meet with the Program Director and their faculty advisor to discuss individual career goals and to plan their educational curriculum. These meetings continue on a regular basis during residency and are the foundation of our mentorship program. Additional professional development is promoted at the annual intern retreater and during leadership workshops for the PGY 2 and PGY 3 residents.

A strong effort is made within the residency to meet the research and scholarship goals of individual trainees. Hospital-based faculty who have on-going research projects may invite a trainee to participate in bench or clinical research. In addition, research electives may be taken with the approval of the Program Director either in the United States, or on rarer occasions, abroad. Research electives, carefully planned and scheduled have contributed to the program’s success rate in securing fellowship positions for graduates. Development of a positive attitude toward scholarship during residency is strongly promoted via abstract submission to regional or national meetings, writing book chapters, publication of original articles in peer reviewed journals, or giving oral presentations at professional meetings.
A curriculum in professional development further supports scholarship and a commitment to lifelong learning. Written and oral presentation skills development begins in the PGY 1 year and receives concentrated attention in the second and third years of training.  Resident CV’s, formatted according to Brown University standards, are reviewed and updated frequently.  Verbal feedback on presentation skills is provided to all residents during practice sessions with the Education Coordinator or other faculty members. We also offer on-going assistance with scientific and non-scientific writing to promote scholarship and general written communication skills.
The training program is responsive to resident career plans and much effort accompanies the process of preparing both the residents and advisory faculty for guiding the process. We believe that our overall curriculum and the individual attention provided to each resident combine to produce graduates ready to take the next step in their professional careers.
