Chief Residency:
Mazen Alqadi, MD has been selected to be the Internal Medicine Residency Program Chief Resident for 2011-2012. Dr. Alqadi’s long-term goal is to pursue an academic career in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He is working closely with Dr. Dennis McCool on several research projects and has had abstracts accepted by the American Thoracic Society.  Mazen’s knowledge, work ethic, research interests and commitment to improving the residency program were among the factors leading to his selection. We look forward to working with Mazen and congratulate him on being chosen as Chief Resident!

Regional Professional Meetings:
There are several important dates that are relevant to Internal Medicine residents. The Memorial Hospital of RI annual Kenney Research Day is scheduled for March 5, a Friday. Abstracts were due on January 18 for both podium and poster presentations. The regional Society for General Internal Medicine meeting will be held in Providence on April 2. Drs. Joseph Rabatin and Joseph Diaz are the organizers for this meeting and residents are encouraged to submit abstracts. We want a good representation of residents’ hard work in addition to a show of support for our faculty. The deadline for abstract submission is February 11. Further into the spring, the regional ACP meeting will be held,  offering an opportunity for residents to submit their research, and perhaps, win a cash prize.

Save the date:
Eleanor Summerhill, MD, Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency, will be joined by colleagues from the Pulmonary Department, Respiratory Therapy, Emergency Room, and EMT Training Program in sponsoring a Simulation-based Airway Half-day Conference on March 10 from 9 a.m. to 12 pm in the Sayles conference center. Previous airway conferences have been very well received by the residents. Please mark your calendars, tell our Family Medicine colleagues, and plan on attending!  There will be no intern or ambulatory morning report on March 10.

Match Day:
Another successful interview season will end on January 28. Thank you to the many residents who took part in the lunches, tours, and rounds with the candidates. Match Day is March 18, 2010. Interviewees often provide us with positive feedback about the warm reception they receive at MHRI on their interview days. The new website has also received praise from applicants.

Ice skating party:
An ice skating party is planned for the IM residents on March 6 from 2-4 pm at the Fleet Center Skating Rink in downtown Providence. Join us for two hours of fun and hot chocolate!
